How to get your Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale)
If you move to Italy for work or study (for example at the JRC in Ispra), one of the very first things you will need is the codice fiscale – a personal identification code used in all dealings with public offices, banks, employers, healthcare, etc.
Where to apply
-
In Italy: at any Agenzia delle Entrate (Revenue Agency office). The closest one to Ispra is in Gavirate.
-
From abroad: at the Italian Consulate in your home country.
What to bring
-
Valid passport or EU national ID card.
-
Completed form AA4/8 (application for the tax code). The office can provide it, or you can download it here.
How it works
-
Fill in the form with your personal data.
-
Submit it together with your ID.
-
You will immediately receive a paper certificate with your tax code.
-
Later, you may also get the plastic card (tessera sanitaria) if you register with the Italian healthcare system.
Good to know
-
EU citizens do not need a residence permit for this step.
-
You will need the codice fiscale for: work contract, renting an apartment, opening a bank account, signing up for healthcare, etc.
